Why we Built Oxygen Coach

From Elite Sport to Oxygen Coach: Why We Built an App to Understand Oxygen

For years, our work at Box Altitude has put us alongside athletes competing at the highest levels of sport — from professional athletes to Olympic champions, world champions and world-record holders.

That work taught us something important.

Athletes today have access to an extraordinary amount of data. They can measure heart rate, HRV, sleep, training load, blood oxygen, VO₂ max and almost every kilometre they train.

But altitude — and the way an individual athlete responds to changes in oxygen availability — has remained surprisingly difficult to track and understand.

That is where Oxygen Coach began.

The missing piece in altitude training

Altitude training isn’t simply about reaching a particular simulated or natural altitude.

Two athletes can experience the same altitude exposure and respond very differently.

Duration matters. Consistency matters. Recovery matters. Training load matters. Blood values and iron availability can matter. And ultimately, what matters most is how the individual responds.

Through our work in simulated altitude, we increasingly saw a gap between the sophistication of the protocols being used in elite sport and the tools available to actually understand them.

An athlete might have their altitude exposure in one place, sleep data somewhere else, training in another app, SpO₂ measurements on another device and blood results sitting in a PDF or spreadsheet.

We wanted to bring that picture together.

Born from working with elite athletes

Box Altitude has spent years developing and supplying simulated-altitude technology for athletes and performance environments around the world.

That experience has included working with professional athletes, Olympic champions, world champions and world-record holders.

At that level, altitude isn’t treated as a novelty. It is another physiological stimulus that has to be planned, monitored and adjusted alongside training and recovery.

Working in that environment helped shape a simple question:

What if we could make it easier to understand what oxygen exposure is actually doing to an individual athlete?

That question eventually became Oxygen Coach.

What is Oxygen Coach?

Oxygen Coach is designed to create a clearer picture of how the body responds to altitude, oxygen exposure, training and recovery.

Rather than looking at altitude in isolation, the platform is being built around the relationship between exposure and physiological response.

Depending on the data available to the user, that can include metrics such as:

  • altitude exposure
  • blood oxygen saturation (SpO₂)
  • heart rate
  • heart-rate variability
  • sleep and recovery
  • training data
  • VO₂ max trends
  • blood markers relevant to altitude adaptation, including iron status

The objective isn’t simply to collect more data.

It is to make existing data more useful.

From elite sport to everyday athletes

Some of the ideas behind Oxygen Coach came from environments where tiny improvements matter.

But you shouldn’t need to be an Olympic athlete — or have a sports scientist interpreting your data — to benefit from understanding how your body responds to altitude.

A runner preparing for a marathon may want to understand whether an altitude block is producing the response they expected.

A cyclist may want to compare exposure across several weeks.

A coach may want a clearer picture of how different athletes are responding to the same protocol.

And someone sleeping at simulated altitude may simply want to understand the relationship between altitude, oxygen saturation, heart rate, sleep and recovery.

Oxygen Coach was built to help make those relationships easier to see.

Every athlete responds differently

One of the biggest lessons we’ve learned from years of working with altitude is that there is no single perfect altitude protocol for everyone.

The altitude displayed on a generator or the elevation of a training camp tells us about the environment.

It doesn’t necessarily tell us how an individual is responding to it.

That’s why we believe the next step in altitude training is greater personalization.

Instead of asking only:

“What altitude am I at?”

We want athletes and coaches to be able to ask:

“How am I responding?”

That distinction sits at the heart of Oxygen Coach.

A different way to think about oxygen

Oxygen Coach started with altitude, but the underlying idea is broader.

Oxygen availability changes across altitude, exercise, sleep and recovery. Modern wearables now provide an unprecedented amount of physiological information about those responses.

Our aim is to make that information easier to interpret and connect.

Oxygen Coach represents the next stage of what we’ve learned through Box Altitude: taking knowledge developed through years of working in performance sport and turning it into something useful for far more people.

Built from elite sport. Designed to help everyone better understand their response to oxygen.
