What an Altitude Tent Does

An altitude tent is an enclosure supplied with reduced-oxygen air by an altitude generator. Inside, the air pressure stays normal while the oxygen level is lowered, which simulates the oxygen availability of a chosen altitude.

Athletes use altitude tents in two ways: sleeping in one to accumulate altitude exposure overnight while training stays at sea-level intensity, or training inside one for selected indoor sessions.

Set an altitude in the app. The sensor measures the oxygen level in the tent, and the generator works to hold it there.

Two Altitude Tents: One for Sleeping, One for Training

Both are full-height four-poster enclosures rather than low-profile tents, and both are available with the F10 or F20 Altitude Generator.

Sleep Cloud: the altitude sleeping tent

A four-poster frame that stands over your existing bed, with space above and around the sleeper and continuous airflow. King: 2.35 m long × 2.35 m wide × 1.95 m high. Queen: 2.15 m long × 1.95 m wide × 1.95 m high.

Training Cloud: the altitude training tent

An enclosure for a treadmill, indoor bike or smart trainer, rowing machine or ski erg, 2.6 m long × 1.3 m wide × 2.3 m high. Check your equipment dimensions and clearance before installation.

Prefer the whole room?

The Altitude Bedroom System turns a suitable bedroom into the altitude environment instead of enclosing the bed. It is a permanent installation, sized to the room, for people who prefer an unenclosed sleeping space.

What Is in an Altitude Tent System

Every Box Altitude tent is sold as a complete system, in 110–120 V and 220–240 V configurations.

  • The tentThe Sleep Cloud or Training Cloud four-poster enclosure.
  • F10 or F20 Altitude GeneratorThe altitude generator, also called a hypoxic generator, produces the reduced-oxygen air. The higher-output F20 reaches the selected altitude more quickly and restores it faster after the tent has been opened.
  • Box Altitude SensorContinuously monitors the oxygen level inside the tent and communicates with the generator.
  • Box Altitude AppSet and review the altitude from your phone, on iOS and Android, and raise it progressively over time.

Altitude Tent Prices

Current prices for each tent and generator option are shown on each product page. For a full breakdown of what an altitude tent, a training tent and an altitude room cost, and what drives the difference, read the altitude tent price guide.

Altitude Tents by Sport

How a tent fits into the training week depends on the sport: running, cycling, triathlon and IRONMAN, swimming, and mountaineering and pre-acclimatisation.

Altitude Tent Questions

An altitude tent is an enclosure that sits over a bed or over a piece of training equipment. An altitude generator supplies it with reduced-oxygen air, which simulates the lower oxygen availability of altitude at normal air pressure. A sensor inside the tent measures the oxygen level, and the generator works to hold the altitude you set.

The Sleep Cloud is a four-poster frame that stands over your existing bed for overnight exposure. The King measures 2.35 m long by 2.35 m wide by 1.95 m high, and the Queen 2.15 m long by 1.95 m wide by 1.95 m high. The Training Cloud is a taller enclosure, 2.6 m long by 1.3 m wide by 2.3 m high, built to go around a treadmill, indoor bike, rowing machine or ski erg.

The altitude generator, sometimes called a hypoxic generator, is the unit that produces the reduced-oxygen air for the tent. Box Altitude tents are available with the F10 or the higher-output F20 Altitude Generator. The F20 reaches the selected altitude more quickly and restores it faster after the enclosure has been opened.

You choose a target altitude in the Box Altitude App on your phone. The Box Altitude Sensor monitors the oxygen level inside the tent and communicates with the generator, which works to reach and hold that setting. The altitude can be raised progressively from one night or session to the next.

Many athletic protocols use sleeping altitudes of around 2,000 to 2,500 metres, but the appropriate altitude and schedule vary between individuals. Begin conservatively and increase gradually. People with medical conditions, or with any concern about reduced-oxygen exposure, should seek advice from a qualified healthcare professional before starting.

A tent encloses the bed or the training equipment and can be moved or packed away. The Altitude Bedroom System turns a suitable room into the altitude environment instead, as a permanent installation sized to the room. Our guide to altitude tents and altitude rooms compares the two.
