Equine Altitude Training | Hypoxic Rooms & Chambers for Racehorses

Equine altitude training and custom hypoxic environments for racehorses. Box Altitude designs simulated-altitude systems for equine performance, including hypoxic treadmill rooms, altitude stables and research environments for racing yards, veterinary centres and universities.

What is equine altitude training?

Equine altitude training uses a controlled reduced-oxygen environment to simulate training or recovery at elevation while remaining at sea level. In horses, published research has examined both active treadmill training in hypoxia and repeated exposure to reduced oxygen.

Hypoxic treadmill chambers for racehorses

A dedicated treadmill chamber allows a horse to exercise in a controlled low-oxygen environment while speed, incline, oxygen concentration and training load are managed by the performance team.

For racing yards and equine performance centres, this can provide a way to add a hypoxic stimulus without relying on travel to natural altitude.

Altitude stables and passive hypoxic exposure

Box Altitude can also scope custom altitude-stable concepts for passive exposure and research applications. These projects require equine-specific engineering because horses generate substantially more heat, moisture and airborne contaminants than human occupants.

Equine projects are therefore sized as custom systems. We do not apply the standard human bedroom or training-room F20 sizing rules to horse facilities.

Who are equine hypoxic systems suited to?

  • Thoroughbred racing yards
  • Racehorse trainers and owners
  • Equine treadmill facilities
  • Veterinary sports-medicine centres
  • Universities and equine research institutes
  • High-performance horse programmes
  • Custom racing and rehabilitation facilities

What does the research show?

Peer-reviewed equine studies have reported improvements in measures such as exercise performance and maximal oxygen uptake after structured high-intensity training in moderate hypoxia. The published studies are promising, but generally small, so results should be interpreted with appropriate caution.

Custom equine system design

Unlike a human bedroom or gym, equine facilities need additional consideration for:

  • Heat and humidity produced by the horse
  • Fresh-air and air-exchange requirements
  • Ammonia and stable air quality
  • Treadmill and chamber dimensions
  • Horse and handler occupancy
  • Target oxygen concentration and altitude equivalent
  • Monitoring, alarms and fail-safe ventilation
